At Lone Pine Landscapes, we are seeing more and more clients ask for something grounded, raw and sophisticated: Coastal Minimalism.
Call it Subtropical Brutalism: a look made for our rugged headlands and salt-sprayed cliffs.
It’s a garden that feels like it belongs to the South Pacific, rather than a transplant from Long Island.
The Foundations: Raw and Refined
- Architectural Concrete: Rather than hiding structures, we’re using off-form concrete for cantilevered seating and sleek fire pits. It provides a cool, grey canvas that makes the greens of the garden pop.
- Weathered Spotted Gum: Instead of high-gloss finishes, we opt for silvered-off hardwoods. This natural weathering process mirrors the driftwood found on our shores, creating a link straight back to the beach.
- Hand-Chiselled Sandstone: A nod to Sydney’s natural geology. Using local stone for feature walls or oversized flagging adds an immediate sense of permanence. As one of our recent clients in Mosman noted, a well-executed sandstone wall doesn’t just retain earth; it becomes a “garden focal point” and “feature of the home”.
The Plant Palette: Sculptural and Salt-Tolerant
We’ve moved away from fussy, high-maintenance florals in favour of architectural succulents and hardy natives that offer year-round structure.
We lean into the silver-grey foliage of Westringia (Coastal Rosemary), pruned into soft organic spheres, and the dramatic, leathery leaves of Banksia integrifolia.
When these are paired with the clean lines of Agave weberi or the prehistoric silhouette of a Dracaena draco (Dragon Tree), the result is a boutique-hotel feel that needs remarkably little water.
